BEFORE A STORM
CenterPoint Energy advises customers not to turn off natural gas at the meter. The gas meter should be left on to maintain proper pressure in the natural gas piping within the house and to prevent water from entering the pipes should flooding occur.
If a customer does wish to discontinue natural gas service, the natural gas should be turned off at each appliance.
Later, to restore natural gas service to an appliance, it is only necessary to follow the written instructions located on the appliance for relighting.
If you are unable to locate instructions, call a qualified plumber.
AFTER A STORM
As you return to your home or business, please be alert for natural gas leaking.
What to do when you smell natural gas INSIDE your home or building:
Step 1: Leave immediately on foot, taking your pets and neighbors with you! Do not use electric switches, telephones (including cell phones) or anything that could cause a spark. Do not drive your car. A car creates a spark when started.
Step 2: Go to a safe location in a nearby home or building. Then, call 911 and our gas leak hotline. Never assume that someone else has reported the gas leak. Alert your neighbors. Remember, CenterPoint Energy checks suspected natural gas leaks at no cost to you.
Step 3: Never try to repair a natural gas leak yourself. Leave all repairs to a trained technician.
What to do when you smell gas OUTSIDE your home or building: IMMEDIATELY LEAVE THE AREA
- Leave immediately on foot in a crosswind direction away from the leak or vapor cloud and maintain a safe distance.
- Warn others to stay away from the leak. Abandon any equipment being used in or near the area.
If your home or building was flooded, call a licensed plumber or a natural gas appliance technician to inspect your appliances and natural gas piping to make sure it is in good operating condition before calling CenterPoint Energy to reconnect service.
If your natural gas service was interrupted, and you are now ready for service to be restored, please call CenterPoint Energy, and a service technician will be dispatched to your home or business to reconnect service.
Before conducting cleanup, call 811 to locate utility lines prior to digging on your property.
