Yes! Free legal assistance is available through the Houston Bar Association and the Houston Volunteer Lawyers at www.makejusticehappen.org.
Their phone line is available Monday through Friday, September 5th to 29th, from 3 pm to 5 pm. Extended hours from 5 pm to 9 pm will be offered on Wednesday, September 6th, and Wednesday, September 20th. Call (713) 759-1133 during the hours of operation. The same service will be provided for Spanish speakers on Thursday, September 7th, between the hours of 5 pm and 9 pm.
If you wish to speak with a lawyer in person and apply for free, long-term legal representation, please call our Intake Line at (713) 228-0732 to find out about our next free legal advice clinic, where you can sit down face-to-face with an attorney to discuss your situation and your options.
The State Bar of Texas Disaster Hotline is available — specifically low-income Texans — at (800) 504-7030. The hotline, answered in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, connects low-income people affected by a disaster with legal aid providers in their area who can help with such issues as replacing lost documents, answering insurance questions, helping with landlord-tenant problems, and handling consumer protection concerns such as price-gouging and contractor scams during the rebuilding process. Callers can leave a message at any time.
They also started a disaster relief volunteer form, which attorneys licensed in Texas can fill out here.
